As I reflect on my time at Bridgeway of over 16 years, I am continually inspired by the principles that define us as a diverse congregation. In the quiet moments of prayer and reflection, the Gracism principle of “I will share with you” often comes to mind. This principle goes beyond simply sharing material possessions; it calls us to share our experiences, stories and lives with one another. Gracism is about embracing our uniqueness and finding common ground through connection.

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience for myself and then share a hidden gem right in our Howard County neighborhood on Red Branch Road – Masala Bazaar. Despite being part of this community for so long and my Indian-American background, I had never ventured into this Bangladeshi/ Indian grocery store until a friend recommended it. This spontaneous visit turned into a wonderful opportunity for connection and exploration.

Accompanied by Kyle Rodrigo, who is of Filipino heritage, I explored this “new” bazaar that connected deeply with my cultural heritage with sights and smells that took me back. I co-lead The Gracism Academy, where we teach 18-28-year-olds how to lead using the principles of Gracism, with Pastor Will Eastham, and we are always looking for local, culturally influential places to eat together. I loved the idea of bringing that group to experience this store! What better way to experience cross-cultural connections over food than to support a local business that connects with my background?

So, on one of our regularly scheduled Saturday meetings, Pastor Will and I hosted The Gracism Academy class at Masala Bazaar, just a short walking path away from Bridgeway’s Columbia Campus. We shared stories, laughter, and prayers as we broke bread, and we embodied the Gracism principle of “I will share with you.” We wove connections that went beyond words and enriched our understanding of each other and those around us.

As we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I encourage each of you to embrace your roots and explore the richness of your cultural identities. Take time to reflect and seek God’s guidance in embracing the principles of sharing. Let’s actively seek out hidden treasures within our community, like Masala Bazaar, and share these experiences with one another.

I am eager to learn more about the cultural gems that define each of you. If you see me in the church lobby, please take a moment to share your stories and recommendations. Let’s continue to build bridges of understanding and appreciation, celebrating the diverse tapestry that makes our congregation unique and vibrant.

Let’s commit ourselves to creating a culture of sharing within our church family and supporting our local community. Whether it’s sharing a meal, sharing a story, or simply sharing a smile, let’s make a conscious effort to connect and support one another. By embracing the principles of Gracism, we can strengthen our bonds and build a community that reflects the love and grace of our Savior.
